Chapter 19
“DID HE TELL YOU ANYTHING?” I asked Hank as soon as I spotted him.
He was standing in front of a black door, and I assumed my attacker was in the room behind it.
I couldn’t hear anything, so the room was probably soundproof, which wasn’t a surprise considering what it was used for.
“Not much, I’m afraid,” Hank said. “But we’re going to do our best to find out what his motive was, and if there’s anyone else who might be a threat to your safety.”
“I want to see him,” I said, and Hank’s eyes widened.
“Um, ma’am, I don’t think that’s a good idea.”
“Why not?” I asked. “Can he talk?”
“Yes, he can, but we’re in the middle of his interrogation. Things like that can get messy.”
My eyebrows shot up.
Wait, did he think that I would freak out if I saw them torture the guy?
For real?
“Just let me in,” I said, glancing at Caden over my shoulder. “And Caden too.”
I wasn’t about to go anywhere without Caden, especially since I didn’t know if the men inside were on my side or not.
Hank regarded me for a few moments. “All right. If that’s what you want.”
“It is.”
“But I have to warn you once again. The sight might not be pretty, and he might say some things that you might not want to hear.”
Did he expect me to burst into tears or something?
I fought the urge to roll my eyes. “Do you say things like that to my dad? Would you say any of it to my brother? If things had gone differently and he weren’t our enemy now, of course.”
Hank’s lips spread into an awkward smile. “No. I guess not.”
“Then don’t say them to me either.”
“Yes, ma’am.” He pushed the door open, and Caden and I entered a dim room.
The attacker was tied to a chair in the middle of it, and it looked like the metal chair was attached to the floor, because when one of the men punched him in the face, blood flying everywhere, the chair didn’t move.
Everyone seemed to freeze on the spot once their gazes fell on me, and they immediately stepped away from the attacker as if they weren’t sure what to do. Their eyes flitted to Hank, but he didn’t say a thing.
Were they all just so damn surprised to see me here? Or were they more worried about Caden?
Then again, it looked like they were weirded out by both Caden and me being in here.
I ignored them and focused on the attacker.
His face was a mess. Blood was dripping from his nose and mouth, and there were bruises forming on his skin. His hair was caked with sweat, and his dark eyes glared at me.
His bloody lips spread into a wide smile. “Look who’s here,” he said. “The little bitch.”
Caden took a step forward and hit the guy in the face so hard that his head snapped to the side. “Don’t talk to her like that!”
The attacker burst into laughter after he spat out some more blood.
